Forklift Types in Heavy Robotic Industry

A forklift is a piece of machinery which is used to lift and move large loads. There are numerous useful applications for a forklift, and many warehouses, construction sites, and manufacturing facilities have forklifts on hand. There are a number of different types of forklifts, intended to meet various weight limits and consumer needs. Several manufacturers dominate the forklift industry, including Crown and Toyota. Suppliers of heavy machinery usually stock a range of forklifts for consumers in need, both new and used.

3 Wheel Electric Sit-down Cushion Tire Counterbalance

Multipurpose vehicle with cushion tires primarily used on smooth surfaces to load trailers, stack loads, rack loads, move pallet loads throughout facility. Three wheel units can turn in tighter spaces than 4 wheel (approximately 10 1/2 ft). A wide variety of attachments are available for these units. Electric trucks are strictly indoor vehicles. They are quiet, non-polluting and have low operation and refueling costs. Charger is required as with all electric powered units.

Capacity: 1,500 to 5,500 lbs

4 Wheel Electric Sit-Down Cushion Tire Counterbalance

Primarily used indoors on smooth surfaces. As with the 3 wheel units these forklifts are good in areas where fumes may be harmful such as food preparation or areas with little or no ventilation. Functionality is similar to the 3 wheel but requires more turning space (a wide aisle for turning 11 ft or more). Charger is required as with all electric powered units. Use Advanced Search for EE and EX rated 4 Wheel Trucks.

Capacity: 2,000 to 30,000 lbs

Internal Combustion Cushion Tire Counterbalanced

Functionality similar to electric truck above. Propane truck can be used indoors with adequate ventilation or outdoors. Cushion tires can be used outside if on smooth surfaces. IC trucks have the advantage of quick refueling, fast travel and lift speeds and perform well where there are steep ramps and slopes. The fuel type is typically liquid propane.

Capacity: 2,000 to 90,000 lbs

Internal Combustion Pneumatic Tire Counterbalanced

Sometimes referred to as a yard truck this forklift is primarily used for exterior application lifting over uneven surfaces. Pneumatic tires absorb shock for a softer ride. They also provide higher ground clearance and better traction on uneven surfaces. IC trucks have the advantage of quick refueling, fast travel and lift speeds and perform well where there are steep ramps and slopes. Fuel type is typically Liquid Propane, Gasoline or Diesel.

Capacity: 2,000 to 120,000 lbs

Electric Stand on End Control (Docker)

This forklift is primarily used indoors on smooth surfaces and works well on docks for fast loading and unloading of trucks. It is suited to stacking and short-distance moves of pallets and other loads that require the operator to frequently mount and dismount the truck. Comes in front wheel drive or single rear wheel drive depending on the manufacturer. Charger is required as with all electric powered forklifts.

Capacity: 1,500 to 5,500 lbs

Single Reach Trucks

Narrow aisle truck (8 ft-10 ft) designed specifically for racked pallet storage. Made in both Single and Double Reach models for single-deep or double-deep pallets. Single-deep version loads pallets 1-deep. Designed for racking areas only on smooth surfaces, not suitable for loading trucks or moving quickly over longer distances. Outriggers help to counter load weight. Charger is required as with all electric powered forklifts.

Capacity: 1,500 to 5,500 lbs

Double Reach Trucks

Narrow aisle truck (8 ft-10 ft) designed specifically for racked pallet storage. Made in both Single and Double Reach models for single-deep or double-deep pallets. Double-deep version loads pallets 2-deep in special double-deep racking. Designed for racking areas only on smooth surfaces, not suitable for loading trucks or moving quickly over longer distances. Outriggers help to counter load weight. Charger is required as with all electric powered forklifts.

Capacity: 1,500 to 5,500 lbs

Order Picker or Order Selector

This is a Man-Up type vehicle placing the operator on an elevating platform along with the forks. The Order Picker is designed specifically for hand loading less-than-pallet load quantities into and out of selective rack. This is a Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) vehicle designed to work in aisles less than 6 ft wide. Units with larger platforms are used for picking furniture from high racks. A charger is required as with all electric powered units.

Capacity: 1,500 to 3,500 lbs

Electric Walkie Counterbalanced Stacker

Stackers are general utility, electric powered counterbalanced vehicles suitable for stacking and for short moves such as staging and order accumulating. Unlike the Straddle Stacker the Counterbalanced Stacker contains no outriggers. The load is counterbalanced by the overall length plus the weight of the battery. As with all electric powered units.

Capacity: 1,500 to 4,000 lbs

Electric Walkie Straddle Stacker

Stackers are general utility, electric powered vehicles suitable for stacking and for short moves such as staging and order accumulating. Unlike the Counterbalanced Stacker, the Straddle Stacker counters load weight with outriggers or legs with wheels. Charger is required as with all electric powered units.

Capacity: 1,500 to 4,000 lbs

Container Handler

Container handlers are used to handle full or empty containers which range in size from 20 ft to 40 ft. Some container handlers use 20 ft/40 ft hydraulic spreaders to handle containers, others use forks to lift containers from the bottom, depending on capacity. The fuel type is primarily diesel.

Capacity:15,000 to 120,000 lbs

Low Lift Electric Walkie / End Rider Pallet Truck

Similar to the Electric Walkie Pallet Truck but with the option for the operator to either walk behind or ride on the end. Tines raise just a few inches to clear the floor during transport. Low cost and high maneuverability make these vehicles a good choice where frequent movement of loads is required over distances, such as movement between departments or storage areas. Options include double pallet length forks that allow you to move 2 pallets in one trip. Use Advanced Search for Electric Walkie Standup Center Control Trucks.

Capacity: 5,000 to 8,000 lbs

Low Lift Electric Walkie Pallet Truck

Designed to be an economical, powered lift truck for transporting loads short distances that an operator can comfortably walk. Primarily used indoors. These trucks are very popular in grocery warehouses. Tires are hard and fork size is usually 27 in. wide x 48 in. long. Tines raise just a few inches to clear the floor during transport Charger is required as with all electric powered units.

Capacity: 3,000 to 8,000 lbs

Electric Side Loader

Designed to handle oversized loads in narrow aisles, the outrigger platforms provide load stability during transportation. The mast does not pivot, making put away and retrieval much like counterbalanced trucks.

Capacity: 6,000 to 160,000 lbs

Electric Man Up Swing-Reach Turret

Very narrow aisle truck allows storage of pallet loads in racking with aisles less than 6 ft wide. Man-up design facilitates accurate placement in tall racking (up to 40 ft.). An additional mast and carriage with mounted forks acts as a turret turning 90 degrees in either direction. This allows pallet placement to either side of the aisle. This type of vehicle generally requires a guidance system and very level floors. Requires charger as with all electric powered forklifts.

Capacity: 3,000 to 6,000 lbs

Counterbalance Turret Truck

Used to store pallets in very narrow aisles to heights of 25 ft or more using a rotating mast that swings 90 degrees to one side to enable stacking without turning the truck.
